Ethiopian Troops to pull out

NewYork Times: “The prime minister of Ethiopia, Meles Zenawi, said today that his country, one of the poorest in the world, could not afford to keep its troops in neighboring Somalia much longer, and that Somalia’s stability depended on the quick injection of foreign peacekeepers. ”

I hope he follows through with that. Right now, the best thing to do is exactly that, get the hell out of Somalia and let them take care of their own affairs.

The Ethiopians have met their objects, i.e. to get the Islamists out of the picture, and that seems to have been achieved. Staying there any longer will be a disaster. Meles is right, it is just financially and Politically unsustainable.

So that all the sacrifices made won’t be in vain, community of nations should do their share to build on this success. I hope AU will be able to urge and organize member nations to contribute troops, and the rich nations to finance the whole thing. Crazy Islamists anywhere is a problem for the entire world, regardless of distance. Responsibility to deal with them should be shared.
